How to Use Your Intuition to Serve You

“I trust my gut-feeling/inner voice.”

“I have a bad feeling about this.”

“Something about this person just doesn’t feel right.”

“I have a strong hunch.”

“I had an aha moment!”

“I can’t explain how but I knew that was the right decision to make.”

I’m pretty sure one or all of the above statements have crossed your mind at some point. When you can’t put a finger on why you feel the way you do about something or someone which serves to protect you most of the time or turns out to be right in the end. Like making the right hiring decision, turning down an offer that looks great, choosing a life partner, not taking a particular road, postponing a flight, checking up on someone you haven’t talked to in a long time, etc.

Intuition is one of the best gifts given to human beings. One that has been scientifically proven to be the highest form of intelligence. Great minds like Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs considered intuition to be at the heart of everything they did – which served them well.

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.” – Albert Einstein

Steve Jobs spent a considerable amount of time in India and he observed how the people there tapped into their intuition. In his opinion, Jobs believed that intuition was more powerful than intellect and he used it to guide him in the work he did at Apple. Given the admirable body of work he left behind, I must agree with him.

What is intuition?

Simply put, Intuition is spiritual wisdom. It is a feeling-based form of communication between your soul and body. Using our intuitive abilities does not involve intensive rational thinking processes and that’s why we refer to it as the sixth sense, hunch, gut feelingpremonition, instinct, inner voice, spiritual guide, etc. Intuition serves to guide, protect and inform us and this communication comes from our subconscious mind.

How can I tell I have intuition?

Every one of us is blessed with intuition and you may not have paid much mind to it or labeled it but it’s within you. It’s that inner voice that talks to you. Intuition is like a superpower that seeks to give you that which your other five senses does not and when cultivated, it can go a long way into helping you tap into your highest self or develop higher consciousness.

Types of Intuition and How to Tap Into them

  1. Clairvoyance – The Intuitive Act of Clear Seeing

This is the ability to gain visual telepathic information that others can’t see. It can manifest as somewhat of a daydream when you have visions and flashes. This intuitive gift can be used to get information about an object, a person, events, or a location. It doesn’t necessarily have to be things you see in the physical realm but in your mind’s all-seeing eye – also called the third eye.

  • You may be a clairvoyant if; you have vivid dreams and imaginations, you see people’s auras, you visualize easily, you see flashes of twinkling lights/colors, you’re a visual learner, you believe in seeing signs from the universe and you’re able to visualize tasks.
  • You can strengthen your clairvoyance by practicing meditation to help you become more aware of your thoughts/visions/daydreams, practicing mindfulness which is the art of being intentional with your attention and driving it towards what you can see, journaling the images that come to mind and ensuring that your energy is balanced. Invest time into these practices and record the patterns you see in your visions which may be communicating something to you.
  1. Clairaudience – The Intuitive Act of Clear Hearing

This is the ability to hear or access sound frequencies, resonances, and vibrations within yourself or from other sources that most people can’t hear. You may refer to it as inner hearing which is often calm, soft, and sounds just like you. It can serve as guidance, warning, or instructions.

  • You may be clairaudient if; you are very sensitive to sound, you crave quietness, you often hear high pitched voices from nowhere, you hear your name being called out even when it’s not, you feel as though you can hear what animals are thinking, you’re an auditory learner, you’re very creative, and you’re musically inclined.
  • You can strengthen your clairaudience by isolating different instruments when listening to music which trains your brain to pick up on subtle sounds, sit still in nature or a quiet place in reflection to learn how to hear every sound around you (loud and soft) and name it, and it’s useful to record these voices so that you can determine your thoughts and those coming from a clairaudient channel.
  1. Claircognizance – The Intuitive Act of Clear Knowing

This is an instant feeling of just knowing – or what we call instinct. Information suddenly comes to mind without logic, prior knowledge, briefing from others, without reason, and sometimes memory of it. You just get this strong gut feeling about things and you’re often right about them. It’s like an instant download of information that doesn’t go through rationalization.

  • You may be claircognizant if: you can predict outcomes and come up with solutions quickly, you know when someone is lying or is untrustworthy, people often come to you for guidance, you’re a self-learner, you enjoy logical thinking and analyzing, you love reading and writing, you have a lot of a-ha moments, you’re naturally full of wisdom and you have strong gut-feelings.
  • You can strengthen your claircognizance by paying special attention to“I just know hunches and keeping a record of them to track the patterns and see if you can adequately predict situations, speaking a question or intention and meditating to receive the answers and sitting in silence, focusing on your breath and allowing your spirit to “download” messages.
  1. Clairsentience – The Intuitive Act of Clear Sensing

This is the ability to sense or feel other people’s emotions and pain without being told about them. It involves tuning into other people’s energy or sensing energy – and it doesn’t have to be intentional. Empaths are people who have strong clairsentience because they are highly sensitive to how other people feel and they experience the same emotions intensely.

  • You may be clairsentient if: you’re extremely sensitive and others say that about you, you’re a natural healer, you sense energy in a room, you dislike big crowds, movies make you cry, seeing other people in pain makes you emotional, you can feel the energy on objects, you experience goosebumps a lot, and you have sudden mood changes.
  • You can strengthen your clairsentience by learning to work with energy and harnessing it through meditation, healing, and light work, learning what affects your energy like thoughts, feelings, actions, and cleanliness, decluttering your space and mind to clear energy blockers, and learning how to listen to your emotions by making room for them to be understood and processed by you.
